The Ohio Manufacturing Institute is a collaborative network that enables manufacturers to become globally competitive, locally. This is achieved by connecting industry needs with Ohio assets such as faculty research, student co-located interns, and access to university labs and equipment.
OMI’s Mission
OMI’s mission is to make the technical resources of the Ohio region apparent to industry and to facilitate their use for economic development. Through partnerships and collaboration, OMI provides manufacturers the quickest and most cost effective mechanisms for Research, Development and process support.
Why is American manufacturing essential?
The US Trade deficit in manufactured goods is roughly $850 billion per year. This amount greatly exceeds what the US spends on imported oil and middle-eastern military conflicts combined, and is more than 5 times greater than our export surplus in services. The losses in manufacturing are particularly troubling because manufacturing companies are highly interdependent. They provide specialized services and products to one another. As one industry-type (species) leaves the country (goes extinct) it is much harder for the others to survive, much like an ecosystem. The examples of Germany and Japan show that it is possible to use manufacturing as an economic driver in a high-wage, environmentally conscious country and provide a substantial positive balance of payments.
What are OMI’s core values?
Innovation and dissemination
Collaboration between companies and across industries
Using and supporting established programs before building new
Recognizing local global leaders, and becoming global leaders in new areas.
