NPR’s Adam Davidson writes in the New York Times (12/29, Subscription Publication) that in the past, the US and China “have reached an uneasy, unspoken economic agreement” about China’s low-cost manufacturing being matched by research and development advances in the US, giving the latter higher margins. Now, however, “China’s decade long rise from a non-player in R. and D. to the world’s second-largest spender poses a serious threat.” China is set to pass the US in R&D spending in the 2020s, “and if US government labs, university departments and corporate researchers aren’t already on top of the next generation of breakthroughs, the country will very likely fall behind in 10 or 20 years when those innovations become marketable products,” Davidson argues.
